Marketing is defined by the American Marketing Association as “the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.”
It can also be defined as “the process by which companies create value for customers and build strong customer relationships, in order to capture value from customers in return”.
Sales and marketing are what drive companies to produce their products and to know how much to produce and when to bring it to market. It also tells companies when to stop producing a product that has outlived its marketable life. The difference between a company that succeeds and one that fails often lies in it sales and marketing people. It’s no secret that the company with the best product often gets passed up by a lesser competitor with a strong marking program.
Regardless, good sales and marketing people are worth their weight in gold because they’re “rainmakers”, they make things happen! That’s why, the highest paid people in industry either are, or started out as salespeople. Likewise, the majority of CEO’s and COO’s started out in sales.
