Interviewee Questions

At the end of every interview you will, invariably, be asked if you have any questions. Asking questions shows that you have interest in the position and that you are able to formulate some feedback regarding the job.

Here are some sample questions to keep in mind. Depending on the position, it’s up to you to decide which questions you might want to use, as they may not all be appropriate:

  1. Why is this position open?
  2. Why is the position not being filled from within the organization?
  3. How often has it been filled in the past three to five years?
  4. How will the company change in the next 5 years?
  5. As someone who has worked here, can you give me a brief description of the company from your perspective?
  6. Can you describe the company growth in the next two years?
  7. What gives this company the edge in the market?
  8. What are the company’s biggest challenges in the job market?
  9. How is the company going to meet these challenges?
  10. In what ways has this organization been most successful in terms of products and services over the years, particularly more recently?
  11. What significant changes do you foresee in the near future?
  12.  What was the primary reasons for the person leaving?
  13. Were they promoted or better opportunity?
  14. Why did the person who held this position most recently leave?
  15. In what ways were you most pleased with what they did?
  16. How did they leave things running?
  17. How long did they work for the company?
  18. What is going to be the most important skills sets for this position?
  19. In your mind can you describe the ideal candidate?
  20. Can you describe a typical day to this position.
  21. Is there any damage control that needs to be addressed, and if so is there a time line?
  22. Tell me about your management style and how it relates to this position?
  23. If I have questions are you approachable?
  24. What is the career path at the company for this position?
  25. What about continuing education?
  26. Professional training, etc.
  27. Where is the greatest room for improvement?
  28. What would you like done differently by the next person who fills this job?
  29. What are some of the objectives you would like accomplished in this job?
  30. What is most pressing or critical issues or opportunities?
  31. What would you like to have done within the next two or three months?
  32. What are going to be the more difficult aspects of the position?
  33. What are some of the more difficult problems that I will have to face in this position?
  34. How do you think these could be handled best?
  35. Explain in your words what my responsibilities and other duties would be.
  36. What do you want to see?
  37. How would you describe your management style?
  38. Who would I be working for and reporting to and being evaluated by?
  39. How would you like to be informed on different projects, programs, issues, etc.?
  40. What are some of the long-term objectives that you would like to see completed?
  41.  How do you bring out the best in your employees?
  42. How do you motivate them to take an active part – to get them personally involved in a project?
  43. What freedom would I have in determining my work objectives, deadlines and methods of measurement?
  44. What kind of support does this position receive in terms of people, finances, etc.?
  45. In terms of status, prestige, and influence, how does this department compare with others, especially from the viewpoint of the top person?
  46.  How does this compare with your boss and those above him or her especially the chief executive?
  47. Where could a person go who is successful in this position and within what timeframe?
  48. How did you get started in this company?
  49. With my background and skill set how you see me contributing to the overall organization?
  50. What do you see as my strengths, shortcomings, and chances for this position?
  51. 30/60/90 Day plan – What would be the first project.
  52. When would you need me to start?
